Meet Jane Snipes

Award-Winning Recruiter and her industry’s Den Mother

Jane has over 30 years of recruiting experience and was a nationally-ranked and award-winning recruiter with Management Recruiters before founding Northstar Recruiting in 2000. Given to her ability to listen, counsel, and coach, she’s been called her industry’s “den mother.”

When recruiting slowed during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Jane started culling through twenty years of recruiting stories then began to craft a guide to help job seekers navigate the entire search process. From resume writing to job hunting to interview preparation, she has drilled down to the basics of each topic and put to paper not just what to do, but also the how and the why behind it all. What surfaced was Surviving the Job Search, the ultimate guide to navigating the job search journey.

What is one fact about your book that may surprise people?
It’s a fast read. With less than 120 pages, you can start reading after breakfast, be done by lunch, and get a running start on your job search in the afternoon; plus I explain not just the what to do but also the why and the how behind it all.

What is the most important tip in your book?
Don’t answer your phone while using the bathroom.

Jane has coached thousands of job seekers through the search process. One international job seeker was coming across as too formal in the interview and she pointed to the cultural difference between his home country and his newly adopted country. Jane suggested a more relaxed interview style would mesh better with the prospective hiring manager. The candidate’s new approach worked like a charm and he landed the job. For a new Ivy League college graduate who had plenty of first-round interviews but had not been able to gain any traction beyond that, she suggested he more clearly enunciate his words in order to come across more confidently. Two weeks after adopting his new style of communication, the job seeker landed a job with a top 10 consulting firm.

At times, it is not your experience that trips you up, it is the way you communicate that experience. Surviving the Job Search is full of tips that can help you refine your communication style to effectively express yourself to different audiences.
